Lee Robertson, men’s swimming representative, spoke about the student-athlete U-Guides partnership involving tours of JPJ that are given on Fridays at 1pm and by request. This is a good recruiting tool for coaches to use. He needs 3 more student-athletes to volunteer.
President Chambers asked for any issues within each sport and none was brought up.
Craig Anderson as the Compliance Director was introduced.
Sign ban at football games was brought up. Trey Miller and Jerome Meyinsse are going to try and work on this.
President Chambers reported on L2K8 - the University’s Student Affairs Office summer leadership conference and noted that student leaders want athletes to become more involved in non-athletic related activities.
SAAC Executive Committee officers brought up Facebook pages for discussion as a reminder to student-athletes that all pages should be appropriate. President encouraged SAAC Reps to monitor teammates on this.
President Chambers notified of SAAC meeting attendance policy:

Meeting Minutes
- Kyle Rudzinksi talked about Teach for America and becoming a penpal with a class your friends are teaching. It helps out your friends and is very rewarding. The kids learn a lot and respect athletes a great deal.
- Phil talked about service opportunities and SAM presentations
- Team opportunities contact Phil personally.
- Individual opportunities go to the webpage.
- Presentations- Tuesday (Feb 26), 7:00p.m. in Wilson 301. ADAPT is doing a safe spring break presentation. For teams who have not completed their alcohol-related SAM Presentation should plan on attending.
- Ashley- ADAPT presentation.
- Will be interactive. Talking about alcohol as well as personal safety.
- Spring break plans?
- Alcohol poisoning: Know the signs (cold, clammy hands/ non-responsive to pain/ not responsive to light/ pulse too slow is a bad sign.
- Ways to help an intoxicated friend: No puking! If they are throwing up put them on their side. Actively check on them every 30 minutes. If they are in a really bad state call 911. Water is a BAD idea post-intoxication. Mix water in with drinks and when you get home if you aren’t drunk.
- The use of fake ID’s is also very common during spring break. It is a very serious offence.
- 25 % of Uva students possess a fake id which is a Class 1 misdemeanor if you get caught and possible jail time. It is actually a larger offence to borrow someone’s id because it is in violation of the Patriot law.
- Children’s Hospital Visitations- it really helps!!!
- Every Monday for an hour at one o’clock.
- Contact Pbf2j@virginia.edu
- The people who work there also benefit from the athletes visiting.
- Shootout for Cancer
- Date changed to Sunday, April 20. 11-2pm (still awaiting approval)
- Michael Hagos- respond with sizes to him as well as your team sizes.
- Split up into Shootout groups.
SAAC Meeting Minutes- January 27, 2008
- ACC Compliance Panel: There will be a host of NCAA compliance representatives coming to UVA to ask a panel of student-athletes questions. If anyone is interested in being on the panel, it will be from 12:00-1:00 on Thursday, February 14th. We need a couple more volunteers! Please email bgrant@virginia.edu if you are interested in participating.
- Very few athletes complained about the SHOTS ticketing policy. Only a couple student athletes were unable to get tickets. A few athletes said they do not know enough about how the system works. Please ask you team how they feel about the SHOTS system, if anyone has had trouble with it, or if they do not know how it works.
- U-guides are going to start partnering up with student-athletes to give tours of JPJ and Scott stadium twice a week starting in March. SAAC members will be asked to volunteer to give a couple tours a year. Ryan Hurley will be in contact about a training session to be held in the next couple weeks for the student-athletes interested in participating.
- Canned Food Drive Update: University Athletics will not support community service events at athletic events because they would have to support ALL service events. Therefore UVA was unable to have the canned food drive.
- Still OK with semi-formal for the banquet? Date is now April 28th.
o All teams said that semi-formal dress was OK for this years banquet.
- Face book: Continues to be a pressing issue in NCAA athletics
o NCAA is thinking about not allowing any student athletes to use facebook to alleviate problems with photos.
o “You diligence” is one of the many companies trying to help athletic administrations police facebook- check out the link.

- If you are interested in the College Guide Program/ Teach for America there is an information session Tues from 7:30-8:30, contact Phil Gates for more information.
SAAC Meeting Minutes- December 2, 2007
Spring Athletic Banquet:
• There is a conflict with the typical banquet night. Our reading day, April 30th- the usual night of the banquet, is also the night of the Bruce Springsteen concert. We need to vote on other possible dates.
o Sunday May 4 (During finals)
o Wednesday May 7th (Towards the end of finals)
o April 29th (last day of classes)- The likely date as most people voted for this option.
Rob Skinner: JPJ dining hall update
- He is going to try and get numbers from the budget department with regards to the possibility of having a smaller meal plan option next school year.
Steve Flippen: Parking pass update
• We are not allowed by the ACC to use Special Opportunity Fund for parking
• Will try to get practice parking – in the process of working with compliance
SHOTS: Explain how it works
• Will attack changing the system in the spring to make it more fair for athletes.
Always bring an underclassmen to SAAC meetings in the spring. We are graduating many SAAC reps and want to have a lot of interest for next year!
Billie Jo reminded everyone to always go back to your teams and email information
Wendy Sewack would like suggestions for new honor roll t-shirts. In the past we have used:
• Hoos’ Achieving in the Classroom
• Hoos’ Making the Grade

1. Team Updates
a. Cross country -Men and Women ran in pre-nationals. The men placed fourth as a team. Women’s side place 18th. Emily Harrison was fourth over all in the nation. ACC’s are in two weeks, come out and support your Hoos!
b. Swim team- Swam against top ranked Florida. Stephanie said it was a very positive experience. Both teams swam very well and the women fought every step of the way.
c. Volleyball won Friday in 3 against NC State.
d. Football is now bowl eligible!
2. Social Night
a. 10 people came out for trivia night – awesome experience!
b. Guesstures for next time (two weeks from tonight (October 28). Bring another teammate!
3. Athletics Advisory Meeting Update- This committee is made up of mostly faculty and administration. The meetings give feedback from faculty about their interactions with athletes.
a. New seating arrangement for faculty at football games
i. Seating now based only on donations, not on length of time buying season tickets. If you’re not donating, you’re moved to the end of the list. This is causing problems with loyal ticket buyers who cannot make large donations.
4. Thursday night football game
i. We currently have one every other year. Big video contract that is tough to get rid of
ii. Tough on students
1. You have to move your car by 3:30, miss classes which is problematic
2. Faculty/staff are not paid after 3:30, not reimbursed for pay
a. It is however a big source of revenue for our school. Opinions from SAAC’s were to let it be, it happens only once every other year.
5. Banquet Update
a. Positive feedback from administration!
b. Current ideas: Emmy-like style.
i. Student athlete hosts
ii. Formal dress- more people want to wear cocktail dresses and the guys jackets.
iii. On screen interviews when you arrive
iv. Fun awards- voted for on the internet
v. Team photos
vi. Red carpet
vii. Performer ideas?- dance?
viii. Other ideas were:
1. Have a prom-style photo booth, possibly having alumni of some sort coming back.
6. Student athlete handbook- The exit interviews are finding that people don’t know the rules. We need a more efficient way to actually read the rules.
a. Ways to get student athletes to read the handbook
i. Separate the hand book and the planner
ii. Have quotes on the pages from the planner. Example: rule of the week. Teasers? Challenge the people to go and look it up.
b. Signs in the locker room with top ten rules
c. Get familiar meeting at the start of the year
d. What are ideas to get athletes to know the rules better?
i. Offer t-shirts if you pass a test?
ii. Fourth years on each team making a presentation to the team about the most important rules. This could be the SAAC reps responsibility.
7. SARG update (Sarah) – A group of student-athletes with a GPA of 3.2 or higher in their major. These students would be a resource for younger student-athletes who need help planning their major and classes.
a. There aren’t many people on the list, so please put a couple teammates on the list that you would recommend.
8. Canned Food Drive
a. We need HELP with planning
b. Are people willing to collect cans on the night of the game? Tuesday or Wednesday night. Competition with VA Tech.
i. Advertise at the previous game.
9. Other
a. Nutritionist Rob Skinner-
i. 2 office locations. One behind cookie table at JPJ and the other is in McCue. He is working on getting a supplement budget so athletes will have access to sports drinks and shakes; he is aiming to have that done before January. Anyone who wants to go in for a nutrition check up can come in and meet with him. Rob is also working with JPJ to change around the format of the dining hall.
b. Athletes have no priority when it comes to Basketball games. This should be addressed to the Student Council athletic advisory committee.
c. 24,000 stipend internship in Indiana. Deadline is on December 7, 2007.
d. ACC Futures pays 16000 and we have three nominees from our school.

SAAC Minutes
1. Welcome and Introductions
2. Goals for the Year
a. Integrate Student Athletes more with student body
i. Under development: Adopt an Athlete- each residence hall will adopt a team and support an athlete that lives in that hall. Student athletes will report to their residence halls upcoming games and results.
ii. Organizations list- this is handed out to all freshmen. The list highlights all organizations around grounds to be of good use to student athletes, especially first years.
b. Community Service events
i. Canned Food Drive- Meghan O’Leary
Last year UVa had a weak showing. VT did one at home basketball game, and we were supposed to have an inter-school competition. We’re trying to get Marketing involved this year to make it more effective. Possible inter-team competition this year?
c. Create more dialogue with SAM/SAAC
i. Social Night- Lauren Echko (3rd year interest Student Council) – SEPTEMBER 23. (We’re going to try this every 4th Sunday each month)- Trivia night, bring a teammate.
1. Ideas of the night were: Uhall access = dodge ball, etc., board games.
d. Improvements/ Committees
i. JPJ dining- Proposal, Budget
1. New Nutritionist- Rob Skinner starts Sept 17th. Office will be in JPJ. He can take you through the dining hall line and show you what is healthy to eat. New chef this year as well who is open to suggestions.
2. Athletic 50- trying to get it approved. Meal plans will probably not change until next year.
ii. Foreign Language: Currently working with Dean Most for more flexibility- Professors and TA’s are being very tough on athletes, only allowing them to miss two days.
iii. Fourth year banquet- last year coordinators, finger food, Craig Littlepage speaking?
3. Other
a. Face Book warnings- Janine
i. Relay to the teams: NO PERSONAL INFO
1. Student athletes are targeted. Reporters can go on there and use pictures as discriminating evidence. Be careful of the groups you’re involved in. Language is an issue as well.
2. Soon if someone Googles your name your picture on Facebook will pop up. Go into Privacy settings to stop that from happening!
3. Any problematic questionable information on there can hurt fourth years applying for jobs and third years applying for internships.
b. SARG- Student Athlete Resource Group. Comprised of Student Athletes who have excelled in their major. Advice given will be facilitated through academic advisor.
i. Requirements: 3.2 in your major and taken at least 15 credits in your major. Pass this on to your teammates!
c. New Athletics home page coming soon-
d. Other issues: Open for others to give concerns
i. JPJ- serving same food.
e. What’s going well?
i. X Country- going well. 30 points this weekend. We beat William and Mary. 7 women’s schools, 9 men’s (came second).
1. Hosting ACC’s on October 27. BIG DEAL.
ii. Volleyball vs. Tech on Friday @7pm.
iii. Softball open tryouts on Tuesday.
iv. Rowing having open tryouts. Email Sarah Cannon.
v. Special Olympics 10k on Saturday at 8am.
